Organization: Kenton County Parks and Recreation

Kenton County Parks & Recreation, in cooperation with the Kenton County Public Library, is excited to announce its “Letters To Santa, Letters From Santa” program will begin on Monday, November 15th.

Santa’s workshop is really humming and Santa is busy reading letters and making lists! Through this program, children will be able to mail a letter to Santa and receive a response from him by Christmas. Santa Express Mailboxes were installed in Kenton County Public Libraries, the Kenton County Government Center in Covington and Kenton County Animal Services on November 15th and will remain there until December 13th. There is no postage necessary for letters that are dropped off at these locations. Letters may be dropped off during regular business hours.

How to mail your Letter to Santa:

    • Kenton County Government Center in Covington & Kenton County Animal Services: Place letter in the Santa Express Mailbox.
    • Kenton County Public Libraries: Place letter in the Santa Express Mailbox or Drop off letter through the drive thru.
    • All locations are available during their regular business hours.
    • Submit your letter online.

Santa, of course, knows where each child lives; however, the post office needs home addresses to deliver the letters! Because each child at the same address will receive a different letter from Santa at home, it is very important that the child’s name and complete home address are correct and legible.

The program is free, but help Kenton County Parks & Recreation share the holiday spirit by bringing a non-perishable food or personal care item donation for Be Concerned when dropping off the letters.

DROP OFF LIGHTS DEC 1 - FEB 1
Cohen has partnered with local organizations to make it simple for area residents to recycle their unwanted or non-working decorative lights. The 2020-2021 holiday season was brought us the most lights and the most participating locations ever!

The 2020-21 event brought in 26,475 pounds of lights!
The 2021-22 event begins collecting lights on Dec. 1. In the meantime, you can recycle string lights at any Cohen Recycling Center.

All kinds of string lights are accepted during this event, including traditional and LED-style bulbs. Other electric holiday yard decorations, such as a projector or the motor on an inflatable character, may be recycled at a Cohen Recycling Center – visit the Find a Location page and call ahead for more information on recycling these items.

PLEASE, NO BOXES, BAGS, OR BATTERIES
You can help streamline the recycling process by including ONLY lights (no other recyclables or scrap), removing any batteries, and taking your boxes, bags and other containers back with you. We appreciate your help!

How does the health of an individual relate to the health of a community? Whose health is the building industry responsible for? The public health impact of buildings doesn’t begin or end at a sliding door. Building scale decisions can impact health across a variety of populations, time, and geographical scales. By reframing building and community health, we can identify more effective and cohesive strategies to support health and wellness for all.

On December 7-8, the USGBC Summit on Bridging Occupant & Community Health will look at key questions in promoting health for occupants and communities:
    • What does leadership in this space look like?
    • Health for whom? How is equity at the center of this conversation?
    • What are practical tips professionals can take away and apply today to move this forward?
    • What next-generation technologies will help us close the gap between concept and practice?

Professionals from complementary fields, Building Health and Public Health, will come together to discuss a 'community of practice' approach. Each session will be followed by a hosted conversation that integrates engagement opportunities. Attendees will be both experts and contributors; please come ready to contribute to the discussion as well as learn from our speakers.

Save the date for two days of high-level engagement with keynote speakers, advanced case studies, new technology, and explorations of emerging topics.

    Date: December 7th @ 7:00-8:00 pm

The Cincinnati Recycling and Reuse Hub is a permanent, year-round, one-stop drop off location for reusable and hard-to-recycle items.  Hard-to-recycle items such as #2-7 plastics, electronics, and batteries and reusable items such as school supplies and packing materials are accepted during all open hours and are sent to responsible recyclers or given to non-profit organizations. Reusable items are also free for the taking by the public during open hours. The Hub is also an educational resource, helping consumers be clearer on what can and can’t go into curbside bins, recommending other organizations who can take items for recycling or reuse if the Hub can’t take something, and helping people discover other ways to live more sustainably. Since it opened on April 1st of this year, the Hub has been able to divert over 65 tons of materials from the landfill for reuse or recycling.

This presentation will cover what can and can't be taken to the Hub, what to expect when you visit the Hub to drop-off or take away items, and ways you can help the Hub both now and with future expansions.

This presentation will be given by Colleen McSwiggin, Managing Director of the Hub. She was previously the Chemistry Lab Manager and Sustainability Committee Chairperson at Mount St. Joseph University, where she organized electronics recycling events and led the “Beyond the Bin” recycling initiative. For her sustainability work at Mount St. Joe and in the community, she was awarded the St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Award by the Sisters of Charity and the Teacher Environmental Award by the Greater Cincinnati Earth Coalition in 2019. She is also a member of Green Umbrella’s Faith Communities Go Green Facilities Committee.

Join Ohio Citizen Action on 12/9 for a Statehouse Rally to Repeal Ohio's Coal Subsidies.

Ohio’s 2019 energy bill HB 6, whose core was the First Energy subsidies that are the basis of the federal $61 million dollar bribery case, also included subsidies for OVEC’s two aging, inefficient, and polluting coal-fired plants, costing Ohio ratepayers $233,000 a day. Ohio Citizen Action invites you to join them at the High Street side of the Statehouse from noon to 1 pm to send a message to state legislators to end the OVEC coal plant bailouts from HB6! Advocates will line the street holding signs and banners in support of the bailout repeal bills SB 117 and HB 351. Elves will deliver stockings filled with coal to Ohio legislators. Jan. 10—Feb. 7

WHERE: All sessions will take place on ZOOM

    COST: It’s free!

This program was developed by the Pachamama Alliance, (www.pachamama.org), a global community that offers people the chance to learn, connect, engage life for the purpose of creating a sustainable future that works for all. It draws heavily from the groundbreaking work of Project Drawdown (www.drawdown.org) which identified over 80 practical solutions to the challenge of global warming.

    Organization: USGBC

Join us for the fourth session of the USGBC East North Central Region's Thought Leadership Series which will feature a discussion on Equity Strategies. This virtual, interactive session will be focused on the USGBC pillar of Equity.

We will start by addressing equity both as a foundational principle to USGBC and its intrinsic link to LEED. Through a hybrid format of presentations and panel discussion, our thought leaders will offer insights on diversity and inclusion and their connections to the green building industry. Interactive breakouts will challenge us to think differently about how our work helps create a more equitable world.
