    Board Member Overview

    Organizational Summary


    The Village Green Foundation exists to build an environmentally sound and socially just community. Through education and resource sharing it seeks to empower individuals to live more independently and sustainably and to work to make it easier for others to do the same.


    Gardens at the Village Green provide resources for people to grow their own food by leasing individual garden plots, organizing educational workshops, and maintaining its grounds and greenhouse as community resources for food production and learning.

    MoBo Bicycle Cooperative breaks down barriers to cycling by finding new homes for used bikes and by teaching adults and youths DIY bike repair. Members have access to use of shop tools, guidance from experienced volunteers, and can adopt used parts and bikes for pay-what-you-can pricing or volunteer labor.

    Board Member Expectations

    Safer Space

    The Village Green Safer Space policy acknowledges that no single place can be perfectly safe for all people, but that it is each and every person’s responsibility to strive for that nevertheless. Board Members are required to uphold the Safer Space policy in their own actions and to hold other community members accountable for theirs.

    Legal and Fiscal Responsibility

    As a 501c3 non-profit, the Village Green Foundation has legal and financial obligations. It is the Board’s responsibility to see that these are met.

    Leadership Through Action

    The Village Green Board is a working board, and its members are meant to lead by example. All members are expected to be a key volunteer for at least one program session per month. Examples include MoBo Open Shop, Garden Volunteer days, and outreach events.

    Attend Board Meetings

    Regular attendance at monthly board meetings is critical to providing informed and responsible guidance for the organization. We ask members to attend all meetings (and understand that life keeps this from being 100% possible)

    Committee Leadership

    Board members lead best when engaging the volunteer base. We ask each member to lead a committee to support the organization’s mission. Examples are Volunteer, Finance, Communications, Garden, and Shop committees.

    Financial Support

    All Board members are expected to demonstrate their commitment to the organization by making a monetary gift of any amount.

    Length of Term

    In order to provide stable and continuous leadership, we ask members to commit to a two year term of service.

    Saturday Stream Snapshot is back for 2021! We are looking for water chemical testing volunteers who are passionate about the health of our rivers and streams. By participating in collecting water samples from sites around the watershed or performing water chemical testing at our Water Quality Education Center you can take an active role in protecting the Little Miami.

    No previous experience is needed to participate and training is provided. This is a great opportunity to gain experience in the field of water quality testing in a lab setting.


    Saturday Stream Snapshot takes place on the second Saturday of each month from March-November. Water samples are collected by volunteers from around the Little Miami River watershed before 10:00 am on Saturday morning, and subsequent water chemical testing takes place at the Greenacres Water Quality Education Center from 10:30 am – 3:00 pm. Water samples are analyzed for pH, conductivity, turbidity, nitrates, total phosphorous, conductivity, optical whiteners, chlorophyll, and fecal coliform bacteria.

    Organization: Communities United For Action (CUFA)


    Communities United For Action is asking Gov. DeWine to end utility shut-offs during the COVID pandemic. We know he cares about his own grandchildren, so we are asking kids (and their parents!) from all over Cincinnati to write a brief letter or social media post to tell him why he needs to help people keep their water, gas, electricity and internet on. We will put these letters in a short video for social media and deliver them Gov. DeWine sometime in December. It’s the holidays, so let’s send our holiday wish list! Please post to social media or get your letters to CUFA or a CUFA member by December 11.

    If you are using your own social media, quote your kids or use your own words. Gov. DeWine needs to understand what we are all going through, and why it’s so important that he protect Ohioans from utility shutoffs.

    Are you interested in electric vehicles? Do you like communicating on social media? Sign up to be a Digital EV Ambassador!

    EV Cincy is an education and awareness initiative of the City of Cincinnati Office of Environment and Sustainability. We are now recruiting for our second class of EV Cincy Digital Ambassadors. This is a volunteer position that will play a key role in helping to educate 10,000 residents on the benefits of driving electric vehicles, by sharing EV-related content through social media channels. Increased adoption of electric vehicles has the potential to have a major impact in reducing local emissions, improving public health, and helping stop climate change.  

    Registration for our second class of Ambassadors will be open through the end of November 2020, and this round of the program will run from December 21, 2020 - March 22, 2021 with a holiday break from December 24 - January 5. There will be an orientation session on December 17, offered at both 11:30 AM and 5:30 PM.     Organization: Mill Creek Alliance

    Why a BioBlitz?

    Mill Creek Alliance has been working for over 25 years to support the resurgence of diversity in the Mill Creek Watershed and restore the Mill Creek. We have come a long way from the early days when life along the stream was nearly wiped out. The projects and efforts over the years have had a positive impact and there is a resurgence of life in the watershed. But we are scientists and scientists love data and need proof. A BioBlitz is an opportunity for citizen scientists to make observations of species and be a part of the data collection. In 2020, we initiated a Mill Creek species count, and plan to make it an ongoing effort. iNaturalist provides a straight forward way to gather data collected by many people in a specific location. Our project location is the Mill Creek Watershed! So any time you are out in the Mill Creek Watershed and use the iNaturalist app to observe plants or animals, you will be contributing to the Mill Creek BioBlitz!

    REGISTRATION NOW REQUIRED. See link for other procedural changes. Volunteers join up with Arboretum staff every Tuesday morning through October to help with our plant collection maintenance needs.

    Full Description

    A staff member will guide volunteers from our initial meeting site to various areas around the Arboretum, and lead them through the day's project depending on season and maintenance needs. Projects typically include installing new plants, light pruning, and planting bed maintenance but can also consist of other needs such as plant label assembly or off-site plant/seed collection trips.


    New safety procedures have been established to protect staff, volunteers, and public visitors alike - the following is a summary of the procedures directly relating to the volunteer program:

    • Volunteers must pre-register for EACH volunteer event to ensure a max number of participants is not exceeded, and so staff can be prepared with appropriate amount of PPE, sanitizer, and clean equipment.
    • Volunteers are encouraged to bring and use their own hand tools if possible (preferably labeled with the volunteer's name). Typically useful are hand pruners, garden trowel, weeding tools, shovel/spade, pitch fork. The Arboretum will also have tools available, but proper sanitization is required between each person using it. (Thus why it is easier if most people just bring their own.)
    • Volunteers must conduct safety self-checks (just as staff do every morning) prior to arrival at the Arboretum --- confirm to yourself you are NEGATIVE for ALL of these symptoms (not related to a chronic/ preexisting condition): ♦ Fever ♦ Repeated shaking with chills ♦ Sudden onset of aches/ pains ♦ Headache ♦ Recent loss of taste/ smell ♦ Chills ♦ Cough ♦ Shortness of Breath ♦ Sore throat ♦ Nausea, vomiting, diarrhea ♦ Tested positive for Covid-19, had known exposure to Covid-19, or been in contact with someone who is being evaluated for Covid-19 within the previous 14 days.
    • We will still meet at our usual starting spot -- the first parking lot to the left just inside the Arboretum's driveway entrance (look for the flagpole).
    • Before starting their shift, volunteers will sign an agreement form indicating they are negative for every point of the safety self-check (see above) as administered on that particular day.
    • Staff and volunteers must wear face masks/ coverings ("N95" not required) over their mouth and nose while in close proximity to each other. Volunteers are encouraged to bring their own masks, but the Arboretum will provide masks for volunteers without their own.
    • Hands will be washed or sanitized as frequently as realistically possible; tool handles sanitized before and after each shift, and between use by different people.
    • Limit the amount of time spent in close proximity -- instructional periods are fine (with masks and appropriate distancing), but no unnecessary congregating.
    • No volunteer transport in county- or staff-owned vehicles, golf carts, etc. (Specific new procedures must be followed if more than one person is in a vehicle, even among staff.)
    • Volunteers may wish to drive their own vehicle (rather than walk) from our initial meeting site to the particular work site of the day, but carpooling is strongly discouraged.
    • At least for now, our usual lunches at the end of Tuesday volunteer shifts are cancelled, pending further guidance on this specific matter.

    Meet at the parking lot and work throughout the park on litter pick up. All litter will be sorted and discarded/recycled accordingly after the event. 

    Volunteers must wear close-toed shoes, dress in clothing appropriate to the weather (lightweight/long pants). We recommend all volunteers wear a face covering, gloves, hat, sunscreen. Please bring a refillable water bottle, parks discourages single use plastics. 

    Social distancing and safest guidelines in response to Covid-19 will be followed.

    Organization: City of Cincinnati Office of Environment and Sustainability

    The City of Cincinnati's Office of Environment and Sustainability is seeking volunteers to help collect environmental data about the hottest and coolest places in our region during an upcoming heat wave this summer. Data collected by volunteers during the joint one-day heat mapping campaign will be used to develop temperature maps of Cincinnati (see Portland exampleand help address heat-related vulnerabilities across the region. This effort is made possible through a partnership with the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration and CAPA Heat Watch's 2020 Urban Heat Island Community Science Campaign.

    What will volunteers do?  Volunteers are needed to drive [or for those hearty enough, ride a bicycle] along predetermined routes in the Cincinnati area over three separate one-hour periods during a hot day. Volunteers will use a simple data-collection device attached to the vehicle. You can also volunteer as a navigator and help direct drivers’ turns along their route. Drivers will need to cover the same route for all three shifts. 

    Are there any requirements to volunteerDrivers will need a valid driver’s license, auto insurance (not necessary for bicyclists), and access to a vehicle (or bicycle). In addition to the three hours of data collection, volunteers will first be asked to review a video, complete a knowledge-check, and participate in a short online training session and follow up discussion. Based on previous campaigns, volunteers spend an average of 4.5 hours over three weeks, though the majority of time (~3.5 hours) will occur on the selected campaign day. 

    On what day will the heat mapping campaign occur? That will depend on the weather forecast. Heat mapping is best done on a hot temperature and clear-skied day. Using historical weather patterns, and support from the National Weather Service, the target campaign date for Cincinnati is the first week of August. While weather does change, this selected campaign date will be confirmed about one week prior, as forecasts become more reliable. Because we have to wait for the heat—and the fact that summer is such a busy time—we need to assemble an “on-call” roster of volunteers -- which means that we’ll want more people signing up than we need. We will confirm your participation about one week prior to the campaign, when we finalize the date. Please note that signing up does not commit you to the project, rather the process will begin by building out a roster of potential volunteers, and confirmation will occur about one week in advance.
