Wed 11/13 Lecture: Sustainable Energy and Society, Dr. Tom Beck, Ph.D

6pm, Braunstein 300

What is the role of energy in your life? University of Cincinnati Professor of Chemistry and Physics Thomas Beck will deliver a fun, interactive experience as he explores different types of energy sources and their uses in the modern age. Using simple calculations, discover more about energy usage, energy supply and the effect of energy availability on society. While inescapable in our everyday lives, energy is remarkably hard to define and full of surprises. Beginning with a broad overview, we will consider where energy comes from, its different forms and the consequences of each type of energy. Dr. Beck will consider our society’s transition from fossil fuels to renewable forms of energy. What are the costs and benefits of this change? To find out, we’ll focus on human-scale energy consumption and develop a personal energy inventory in order to gain a better understanding of global energy issues. Despite today’s problems, our outlook is surprisingly bright. More information here.
