City Nature Challenge 2021

Cincinnati Park Board & Great Parks of Hamilton County

The City Nature Challenge 2021 is a BioBlitz event to discover and catalog the urban biodiversity within Hamilton County and around the Globe. Over a 10-day period, citizens and visitors will use the iNaturalist platform to identify wild plants and animals within the County. By using a collection platform like iNaturalist, we can obtain a large amount of data over a short amount of time. The City Nature Challenge is an exciting opportunity to see exactly what is living in our urban environment and to have all the collected data stored in one place. There are numerous benefits to taking advantage of citizen science data that go beyond a biodiversity assessment. This event provides an occasion for local citizens and organizations to come together and have fun exploring what is happening in the urban environment in which we live.

Event Overview

City Nature Challenge 2021 is a collaborative competition between cities across the world, that engages residents and visitors by documenting nature to better understand urban biodiversity. The first competition was held in 2016 between San Francisco and Los Angeles. It was so successful that the following year went national and the next, international! For CNC 2021 there will be over 500 cities competing across the globe.

Data

When Cincinnati Parks and Great Parks team up, good things happen. You may be asking, how successful have previous competitions been? Here is a snapshot of the results from last year’s City Nature Challenge:

That is a lot of information collected over only 4 days! Looking ahead, how will this data be used? It can be used for community programming and education; help in making preventative plans for invasive species; and can help prioritize areas that may need more protection or improvement. The opportunities are endless.

For this BioBlitz to be successful, we will need a lot of public participation, which is where you come in. By working together, we can engage the Greater Cincinnati community and even beat out the competition, like Cleveland & Columbus! Thank you for your interest and we hope you will join us.
