Organization: Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Policy Council (an initiative of Green Umbrella)
Part of the Greater Cincinnati Regional Food Policy Council’s (GCRFPC) vision for farm to school (F2S) education is universal classroom exposure of students to agriculture and nutrition literacy education. The Enhancing School Gardens (ESG) project is meant to further that vision by connecting educators, so they can develop shared measures of the impacts of F2S-related programming, focused on shared objectives.
Earlier this summer, F2S and garden educators came together and agreed upon the following shared objectives to evaluate this first pilot year: social-emotional wellness, career readiness, and agri-food literacy. We adapted an observational checklist for educators to report the outcomes of their lessons, and we will collect narratives and surveys from educators, as well as supplementary data from students, parents, and other stakeholders.
The ESG project complements the work we are doing with our recently announced F2S Implementation grant from the USDA. Through the grant, we will expand the Feed Our Future project to get more local, healthy food in school food service, and we will launch the Grow Our Teachers training and professional development program and an agricultural literacy curriculum. The ESG project is also closely aligned with the goals and efforts of CPS Outside to improve the social-emotional wellness and health of school children through environmental and outdoor education.
All F2S and garden educators are invited to join for the kickoff of the pilot year of this Enhancing School Gardens project at our onboarding sessions, via Zoom: 10-11am, Fri., Aug. 6, or 3-4pm, Thu., Aug. 12. Please register for a session and circulate the invitation to any colleagues who might be interested! If you cannot attend but want to receive the recording and further info, please register for that option at the link.
