Arthur E. Morgan (1878–1975) was an educator, engineer, author, internationally sought advisor, and advocate for the small community. As President of Antioch College from 1920 to 1936, he brought new life and vision to the college by pioneering the Cooperative Education program and developing Antioch as an incubator for small businesses. In 1940, at the dawn of globalization, Morgan founded Community Service to promote the economic and cultural vitality of small communities. This organization lives on today as the Agraria Center for Regenerative Practice, cultivating community resilience through modeling regenerative practices that restore ecosystem health, heal our relationship with the land, and grow just and equitable local food systems.

Beyond these institutions, Morgan’s legacy lives on nationally and internationally in the dams and major engineering projects, land trusts, and intentional communities he created or inspired. This conference will remember Morgan’s contributions to the realms of educationeconomics, and community, and consider the ways in which his work can inform and inspire us to address crises and opportunities in these areas today.
