Black Walnut Hunting At Long Branch Farm & Trails

  • October 13, 2021
  • 6:00 PM - 7:30 PM
  • 6926 Gaynor Rd, Goshen, OH 45122

Organization: Cincinnati Nature Center

Preregistration required.

Program participants meet outside at the white Creekside Barn at Long Branch Farm & Trails (6926 Gaynor Rd, Goshen, OH 45122).

Celebrate our native black walnut by helping us gather and process this year’s crop. We’ll head out on the land to hunt for black walnuts and bring them back to the barn where you can help husk them with our antique equipment. We’ll crack and taste some cured black walnuts from last year’s crop, touch on black walnut trees’ importance for wildlife, and provide suggestions for culinary usage of this gourmet nut.

Whether you want a unique family-friendly fall harvest experience or are looking to crack the mystery of how and when to gather, cure, clean, and process black walnuts, this program is for you. We’ll divide into small groups based on your interest.

Length of hike: Upwards of 1 to 1.5 miles, some off trail.

What to wear: As this experience will take us off trail part of the time, long pants and proper shoes are recommended. We’ll be using tongues or gloves to husk walnuts – don’t wear your best clothes (risk of staining).

What to bring: A water bottle and some way to carry it.

Masks are required in all our buildings for all vaccinated and unvaccinated people (all individuals kindergarten and up). Masks are not required outdoors or under pavilions and tents.

*Please note that cancellations must be made at least two weeks in advance of the event. No refunds or transfers of fees will occur if the request is made less than two weeks prior to the event.
